Nana Wolke, Independent 2025, Installation View
Management and NıCOLETTı are pleased to participate in Independent Art Fair with a joint solo presentation of new paintings by Slovenian artist Nana Wolke.
For Independent, Wolke will present a new series for the first time, honing in on and observing the distortion of the symbols of American suburbia through the prism of waning girlhood and newfound power in adolescent sexuality, replete with Campbell’s soup cans, boredom, bananas, seduction, cowboy iconography, and escapism. Painting in her signature style from self-captured low-fidelity footage, she directs her (and our) attention towards Upstate New York, depicting scenes soaked in references to iconic late 90s films such as The Virgin Suicides, or American Beauty. Playing with the viewer’s position and perspective while moving from moment to fleeting moment as one does from exterior to interior spaces, Wolke distills the metaphysics, dreams, and the existential drama of young life at the margins.
Wolke holds an MFA from Goldsmiths, University of London. Solo exhibitions include Breed at Management, New York; Wanda’s at NiCOLETTi, London; High Seat at Castor Gallery, London; 4:28 - 5:28 am at VIN VIN, Vienna; and Some Girls Wander by Mistake at Fondazione Coppola, Vicenza. Group exhibitions include Over you/you at the 31. Biennial of Graphic Arts, Ljubljana; Daddy at G2 Kunsthalle, Leipzig; Painters Painting Painters: A Study of Muses, Friends, and Companions at the Green Family Art Foundation, Dallas; Love is the Devil: Studies after Francis Bacon at Marlborough, London; and No Angels at Wilhelm Hallen, Berlin among others. Wolke was also selected for the 2021 cohort of Bloomberg New Contemporaries.
