Kate Liebman deploys a layered visual language in her paintings through materials such as acrylic, vellum, cyanotype, Xerox transfers, and graphite among others. Drawing from an expansive image library that spans art history, personal ephemera, and scientific diagrams, she collapses multiple temporalities into dense yet rhythmic compositions. Her work reflects an ongoing interest in cyclical time, spirituality, and history. Symmetry, often tied to sacred geometry, recurs throughout, while references range from Bruegel’s The Fall of Icarus (1560) to Kabbalistic diagrams, the Kaddish prayer, and medical imaging. By weaving together such sources, Liebman reveals time as a looping continuum where the personal, the historical, and the spiritual converge.
Liebman graduated with an MFA from Columbia University in 2019 and received her BA from Yale College in 2013. Recent exhibitions include Hopscotch at D.D.D.D., New York; Kate Liebman & Billy Deitz at 6ft Ap’Art, New York; A Picnic State of Mind at Tutu Gallery, Brooklyn; Invitations to Tremble at Management, New York; Medium Rare at Subtitled, Brooklyn; In Response at the Jewish Museum, New York and Toby’s Diary: Film Screening at 15 Orient, New York, among others. She was an artist in residence at the Vermont Studio Center; Art Cake; Keyholder at The Lower East Side Printshop; and AZ West. Liebman was also the recipient of a Helen Frankenthaler Foundation award, a Columbia Residency Support Grant, and is currently a grantee of The First Ten. Her work has been featured in Whitewall, Artforum, The Yale Review, Precog magazine, WKCR, and Two Coats of Paint. Liebman’s work is in numerous private and corporate collections.
